Bertha's Number 2

Is a self-catering two bedroom ground floor apartment which sleeps four persons. The main bedroom has a queen sized bed with a four poster mosquito net. Above the bed is a big fan. There are two bed-side tables with lamps. The brass light on the wall can ‘dim’. There is a built-in cupboard with two lockable drawers, a dressing table with a mirror that can tilt. A hair dryer is provided and there is a wall heater for cold weather.

The 2nd bedroom has two single beds and the headboards are from Bali, with a bed-side table between the beds and built-in cupboards. Each bed has two pillows. Under the floor are two heaters for winter.

The bathroom has a shower and two washbasins on sleeper wood. The light in the bathroom is made of an old copper water cylinder.

The lounge/dining room has a table with six chairs. The copper light above the table consists of the other half of the cylinder as mentioned above. There is an old suitcase which was part of my grandmother’s baggage when she immigrated to South Africa by ship in 1905 from Halle an der Saale in Germany.

DSTV is provided with selected channels. There is also a DVD player for movies. The wooden bench with matching chairs is teak and comes from the Lebombo Mountains in the Eastern part of South Africa close to the Mozambique border.

The ”riempies” used on the chairs are originally made from cows hide. No chemicals were used and they still look new after 25 years’ use. There is a coffee table and wall heater. There are a few flattish baskets on the walls originating from Uganda. The wooden frames on the walls are art pieces in their own right and come from Zanzibar. The one frame with art was made by a friend who lived in Kampala in Uganda. There is a wooden cabinet with lead windows and inside are a few memorabilia from all over the world. The copper lights on the walls were carefully selected and the floors are made of African blue-gums. The wood is very hard.

A door leads from this room to the front stoep which faces the street and garden. This flat has a front and back door. On the back stoep is hanging space for wet clothes. We prefer that no wet towels are hung from any doors.

The kitchen has a small oven and two cooking plates, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge with freezer, a table with chairs, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, dishcloths. We provide dish washing liquid, tea, coffee, sugar, rusks and a half litre of milk on arrival.

There is a washing machine facility on the premises. Please consult us about the use thereof.

ZebetsView

This is our up market one bedroom self catering maisonette unit - with separate entrance.

ZebetsView is a lone standing, self-catering little house in our back yard. The 88 sqm unit was built on top of our garage 7 years ago. We designed the unit with lego blocks and asked an architect to put it down on paper.

On the first floor there is an open plan kitchen, lounge/dining room, and a bathroom. The bathroom has a shower. The shower has a specially made glass sliding door. A wash basin was built into the cement and has a copper tap. The toilet is in a separate room. The bathroom door is a copper art piece originating from the Katanga Province in Congo. Stucco type wall covering was used in ZebetsView.

There are many original copper art pieces in this unit. Heating and a fire place is provided. Please bring your own fire wood. The fire place is actually a Morso stove. The DSTV has all the channels. The furniture is of good quality. The dining room table seats 4 pax.

The kitchen has a stove. Two of the plates work on gas. It is fully equipped with fridge/freezer, kettle, coffee grinder, toaster, micro wave, crockery and cutlery, and wooden cutting boards. There is lots of working space. Tea, coffee, sugar, rusks and a half litre of milk are provided on arrival. A washing machine is available on request, and guests provide their own washing powder.

There is a glazed, double sliding door which leads to a stoep from the lounge. This verandah is sheltered from the south-easter wind and very private. A staircase leads from the lounge area to the bedroom on the top floor. The bedroom has a queen sized bed, a dressing table and two chairs. There is a single bed, two Italian chairs, a tall mirror and has air conditioning. A double door opens to the east and provides a magnificent view of the Jonkershoek Mountains. Simonsberg is also visible, and many a night can be spent watching the moon rise, listen to the owls and wake up to a variety of bird calls. The bedroom has air conditioning.
